BEYOND THE PAD INITIATIVE
ABOUT OUR PROJECT
Initially this program was called “Pad a girl Program”, after time in research, and field assessments we realized that girls needed more than sanitary pads to complete their education. Equipping girls in rural Tanzania with the tools, confidence, and dignity to complete their education.
Beyond the Pad Initiative, formerly known as the Pad a Girl Program
, was born from a simple yet powerful mission to help girls stay in school by addressing the challenges of menstruation.
Over time, through field assessments and community research, we realized that girls needed far more than sanitary pads to complete their education. Many lacked school uniforms, shoes, solar lamps, bicycles, and safe learning environments. Some walked long distances to school, studied in darkness, or dropped out due to poor sanitation facilities or lack of privacy during menstruation.

This realization inspired a transformation:
Beyond the Pad now provides a comprehensive, girl-centered approach that ensures every girl has the tools, infrastructure, and confidence she needs to thrive, and that no basic need stands between her and her education.
In partnership with organizations such as the EK Foundation, and Peace by Piece, we collaborate to share resources, expertise, and outreach capacity ensuring that vulnerable girls in rural Tanzania have holistic support that goes beyond short-term relief. Together, we’re building systems that sustain dignity, access, and opportunity for every girl.
Our Approach: Dignity, Access, and Sustainability
The Beyond the Pad Initiative takes a systems approach to education access and menstrual health, addressing both the individual and structural barriers that prevent girls from staying in school.
Our work includes:
Menstrual Health & Hygiene Management: Supplying reusable and disposable pads, underwear, and menstrual health education to reduce stigma and absenteeism.
Education Essentials: Providing uniforms, shoes, books, bags, and stationery to ensure girls are fully equipped to learn.
Mobility & Safety: Supplying bicycles for girls who walk long distances to school and solar lamps for those without electricity to study after dark.
Sustainable Infrastructure: Supporting the construction of girl-friendly facilities including toilets, water systems, incinerators for menstrual waste management, and safe boarding areas for girls from remote areas.
School Fees & Exam Support: Covering costs for vulnerable girls from low-income families to prevent dropouts.
Community Engagement: Working with parents, teachers, and boys to build understanding around girls’ health and education, fostering inclusive and supportive communities.
Local Sustainability: Partnering with women artisans and youth entrepreneurs to locally produce reusable pads, uniforms, and school items creating jobs while promoting community ownership.

Through this holistic approach, Beyond the Pad ensures that girls don’t just go to school they stay there, feel safe, and graduate with dignity.
